New Hobby Alert!

This one is particularly pretty and impractical. My friend Prairie Peacock and I have had a few play dates since I’ve been between jobs.

We’ve been making wax seals. Like for letters that we don’t write. It has all the fun of buying random stuff and requires very little thought.

So, what do you need?

  • A warmer: some have a candle, but I like the electric ones, because cats.
  • Spoons: PP has nonstick ones with spouts on both sides so lefties can do it more easily.
  • Seal mold: ideally with a cool shape.
  • Wax: either pellets, crayons, or beeswax that has been dyed.
  • A flat surface: I use a ceramic tile.
  • Spatula: for releasing the seals
  • Blade: if you want to make two part seals.
  • Spoon rest: to cool your spoon.

So I started with PP’s seals, but have since bought my own. I have a bee, a G, and a floral that came with the G. I’ve since bought a pine bough and a moon.

But, I couldn’t find a DNA strand. So off to the Makerspace, where I printed spoonrests and a seal.

The seal didn’t fit on my handle that well, but it works as a prototype. Bonus! The seals are $8 on Amazon, but this cost me less than one American quarter to print.

We did your basic stuff.

So once we got the hang of your basic stamps, we got fancy. The first one I did was a two part one. The top part is a snowflake. I used a shiny translucent wax with mica sparkles. Then we cut out the snowflake part and did it again with a midnight blue. Turned out pretty cool!

I also worked with swirls. This one is blue and silver.

I want to do a different swirl tomorrow (we have another play date). Warm the colors separately, and then swirl. I also need to modify the spoon rests, the materials melt a bit, so I’m going to line the spoon rests with painter’s tape.

  1. Oh my gosh! I never thought of using crayons for my wax melts before, but now I have a purpose for all those broken crayons in my craft box! I love adult playdates where you spend the day doing stuff like this! I just had a playdate with a friend where we baked cookies, and we want to do it again for Christmas! So much fun and the stamps look amazing!
