Who’s Who on the Farm – Fall/Winter 2023

As we move from Fall to Winter here at the farm, we should have a roll call of who we have. Let’s start with the goats.

Clover’s “helping” to build a shed.

We have our longest tenure at the farm with Clover. She is a LaMancha that we bought in our surreptitious goat deal at the park over Craigslist.

Clover is into everything. Just in case it is food. Her favorite foods are whatever you have in your pockets and the instructions for the new goat shed.

Next, we got Iris and Violet. Iris is a Spanish Cross of some sort, and has arthritis. Same, Iris, same. We’ve tried shots: Goat 1 – Goad 0. We’ve tried aspirin: Goat 2 – Goad 0. We’ve tried an oral liquid Goat 3 – Goad 1. Now I’ve got a liniment I’m trying because the vet only gave us two doses of the oral liquid. So far Goat 3 – Goad 2.

Violet is our oldest at about four years old. We bought her at auction with Iris. She is a very good auntie, and within a couple of weeks, she’s going to be a mom again.

Then we have Oreo. We usually just call her Mama, because she came to us about an hour after giving birth to Niblet (who we sold this fall so he could have a new herd).

Then we bought Chocolate Chip Cookie and Pickles at auction. Here’s Cookie being very Cookie. Excuse me human, perhaps do you have any food?

And our big boy, Pickles. We didn’t want a male goat, because they smell and are more aggressive, but I think he lives here forever. Someone disbudded him badly, and so he’s got some horn issues. But we love him. Despite the smell.

There’s lots of news coming out in the next few months. And by news, I mean baby goats. More soon.
