Well, S#!T.

The Husband has cancer. Prostate cancer to be precise. To be pedantic, Prostatic Adenocarcinoma, Gleason score 4+4=8, Grade Group IV, involving 5% of prostatic tissue.

He also has thyroid cancer. Worst. BOGO. EVER. I don’t heave the pedantic description yet.

Well, this has been a journey so far. The husband had his annual physical, and turns out his PSA was high. So they order a biopsy.

Biopsy comes back with one spot of cancer. This leads to a PET scan. Which shows a small piece of cancer in his prostate, and a couple of unrelated masses in his thyroid.

So an ultrasound and biopsy later we found out he has cancer in his thyroid as well.

This is apparently a thing. Coupling of Prostate and Thyroid Cancer Diagnoses in the United States.

Anyway…

We started letting folks know, and it turns out we have a good team. My best friend is at KU med, the Husband’s best friend’s wife is a retired oncology nurse. My niece is a nurse, my grandfather was a urologist (he died before I was born, but I’m sure he is helping if there is an afterlife). My cousin (my dad’s cousin to be precise) offered to let us stay with her during our stays in KC. Our friends and family are amazing. We are very lucky.

So we are going to get treatment at KU Med. Thus far it has been great. We have nurse navigators to help us get situated. We met with the Urologic Oncologist last month, and meet with the ENT Oncologist this week.

All in all, we are nauseously optimistic. The literature talks of cure rates, not five year survival. And the numbers are pretty good for each. So now I have a new hobby of cancer research.

I do need to come up with a new name for my notebook though. I started using the name I used for my wedding notebook, but I’m not sure “Notebook of Doom” is a good name for this project.

Wish us luck!
